Each year, the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association honors a legal professional who, in their position of leadership, has allied with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community making a noteworthy contribution to the struggle for civil rights and equality before the law.  This year's award is presented to the Honorable Steven H. Levinson, Associate Justice, Hawaii Supreme Court, in recognition of his sense of fairness under the law as an independent member of the judiciary, and his well-reasoned and passionate commitment to equality for all citizens of the United States.

Signing Statements Bill Introduced
ABA Task Force Report Spurs Specter to Act

The nation may be about to get a civics lesson with an in-depth look at one of the core values of the republic. Or there might simply be a shrug. 

That’s the scenario after a powerful Republican senator introduced legislation Wednesday suggested by an ABA task force report questioning the Bush administration’s use of presidential signing statements.

They are strong calls for strong action, but they rub against what has been, at least until recently, a cohesive one-party lock on the legislative and executive branches of government.  . . . more . . .
