Friends and fellow advocates,

As many of you know, on May 15, 2008, California’s Supreme Court ruled that under the state Constitution, marriage is a basic right, available to all regardless of sexual orientation.

However, radical conservatives across the United States are doing everything in their power to undo the Court’s historic decision. They have mobilized in favor of a ballot initiative, Proposition 8, to amend the state Constitution, a tactic that has proven extremely successful across the country. Concurrent with the election on November 4th, the ballot initiative threatens to have larger implications for the future of the LGBT movement at the national level.

New polls have shown that the amendment is losing support in California and a recent court victory has changed the language of the ballot in our favor.  As promising as these developments may seem, there is too much at stake to rely on polls and abstract voter preferences.  The supporters of Proposition 8 enjoy a significant fundraising advantage and have a determined, highly organized get-out-the-vote effort.

The National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA) is dedicated to defending marriage equality in California and Massachusetts and expanding it to all 50 states.  To that end, we have partnered with Equality California to help stop Prop 8 and we need your help to raise $10,000. We have already raised over $2,000 at the Lavender Law 20th Anniversary Celebration!  We hope you will join with us and help spread the message: No on Prop 8!

To donate and pledge your support for this important cause, please click on the image below. Money supporting Proposition 8 is flowing in from across the country and we need your help to be competitive. Even if you live outside California, you can still make a difference in this important struggle. Remember: the more resources we can make available to this struggle, the more likely it is that we will be able to defend equality in California!

 Sincerely,

D’Arcy Kemnitz
