The Lesbian and Gay Lawyers Association of Los Angeles presents the LGLA 33rd Annual Awards Dinner Gala “A Time for Us” Saturday February 25, 2012, 6:30 p.m. at the JW Marriott Los Angeles Hotel at LA Live, 900 West Olympic Blvd. in downtown Los Angeles. Taking its name from the stirring lyrics to Stephen Sondheim’s “Somewhere” from West Side Story, the theme of the LGLA 2012 Gala Dinner “A Time For Us” was selected as a way to celebrate the triumphs that have resulted from our community’s determination and hard work on equality issues ranging from the nation-wide anti-bullying campaign to the ongoing battle for marriage equality. A Time For Us also acknowledges the legislative and judicial disappointments that we’ve endured and refocuses our attention and those of our supporters toward our collective goal of Equality, for every U.S. citizen no matter their race, color, religion, national origin or sexual orientation.

LGLA will present its highest honors to two highly deserving individuals and their respective organizations that celebrate life, perpetuate equality and provide hope and guidance to LGBT youth across the country. The first honoree is a local lawyer and activist who identified an unmet need in the community and decided to be the one to meet it. The second is a mother who turned her grief into a national movement to identify hate crimes and end violence. Both will be honored for being tireless advocates for equality and for their dedication to saving lives.

The MLGBTQ Bar Association will be holding a fireside chat with law students at the UMass School of Law – Dartmouth on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 6:00 PM in the Francis J. Larkin Courtrooml. Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, OutLaw, Allies, and I.C.L.E. are proud to co-host the CLE program, “Sex Discrimination after Glenn v. Brumby”. This program will focus on the recently decided employment discrimination case, Glenn v. Brumby, where the 11th Circuit held that discrimination against a transgender individual because of gender non-conformity qualifies as sex discrimination. You will hear from the plaintiff, Vandy Beth Glenn, and her attorneys, Greg Nevins, Supervising Senior Staff Attorney of the Southern Regional Office of Lambda Legal, Cole Thaler, National Transgender Staff Attorney for Lambda Legal, and supervising attorney for the Georgia Legal Services Program.

This program is sponsored by Lambda Legal, King & Spalding, the Stonewall Bar Association, and the law firm of M. Denise Dotson, LLC. The program will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on March 20, 2012 at the Blackburn Conference Center. There will be a pre-panel networking reception at 6 p.m. Attorneys who attend will receive two CLE credits. The cost for early registration is $50 for attorneys, and the cost of onsite registration is $65 for attorneys. This event is free for students and non-attorneys. Please join us for a discussion with two attorneys from the Appellate Section of the Civil Rights Division of
the United States Department of Justice. Diana Flynn will offer some reflections on her 25 years as the
Chief of the Appellate Section, and on the rewards and challenges of working for civil rights as a career
government attorney. Sharon McGowan, who joined the Civil Rights Division in 2010, will share her
perspectives on transitioning from the ACLU to the Department of Justice, and will also speak about her
work on Schroer v. Billington, a successful Title VII sex discrimination lawsuit on behalf of a transgender
woman that Ms. McGowan litigated prior to joining DOJ. Finally, Ms. Flynn and Ms. McGowan will also
discuss the Civil Rights Divisionʼs efforts to build on cases like Schroer and the Attorney Generalʼs
February 2011 announcement regarding sexual orientation and heightened scrutiny to advance the civil
rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
