Murderer of Transgender Teen Found Guilty on All Counts

Statement by D’Arcy Kemnitz, Executive Director of the National LGBT Bar Association on the verdict in the murder of Angie Zapata:

“We are extremely heartened that that the jury did not accept the defense’s inexcusable attempt to diminish this terrible crime with a ‘trans panic’ defense,” said D’Arcy Kemnitz, Executive Director of the National LGBT Bar Association. “The legal system does not accept ‘race panic,’ or ‘gender panic’ to excuse violence against people of color or women.”

“A reduced charge would have been blaming the victim, effectively re-victimizing this family, who have already suffered so much,” Kemnitz concluded.
